Agents of change among a pool
of people
A pool of people can be invested with diverse
responsibilities and accountability.
A local pool of people is an important part of the immediate
society and environment and an intended renewal.
The subsequent representativeness and counseling brings on
an investigation as to why certain groups are under-represented
in comparison to others.
Research in sociology reveals that there are certain agents
of change or factors that influence the existence and success
of a council or pool. They can be
understood as:
Age: The age factor plays a major role in bridging the
membership of the pool and the difference the pool is intended
to make. A majority being black, female and young or vice versa
makes a big difference to the kind of interaction that other
members can indulge in. A more socially representative system
makes a big difference. The age group should be more or less
for ideas to be easily accepted and implemented.
Barriers: There can be varied and inter-connected political
systems and selection procedures that affect the ideal ‘pool’
culture and practice. These make it very difficult for many
individuals to get and stay involved. The pool of people should
be based on principles of broad agreement among the members to
reflect an integrated society. The barriers should be
collectively addressed and sorted and the whole team should
move forward as one.
Policies: The pools of people should
incorporate policies that enable the members to be equally
represented, open up opportunities for participation, develop
future intent, the willingness for positive action, ensure
local democracy and increase the legitimacy of the pool system
with equity and fairness. The policies should be designed to
incorporate latest strategies that have been tried and tested
and fit into every individual culture as well.
Approach: The pool of people is also influenced by the general
approach. The policies designed, retention of a rigid body of
members, a non-holistic approach to reform, non-recognition of
factors which inhibit people and even the lack of commitment
and will – all affect the approach and subsequently the change
that the pool is designed to address. The overall general
approach should take into consideration the level of commitment
by each member and adopt a holistic and neutral ‘non-blame’
attitude.
The agents of change or factors that influence the existence
and success of a council or pool affect the social balance of
elected representatives and the agenda. In turn they ripple out
to affect the attempt at modernization and get entangled in the
conscious of the low esteem. The initial concern and criticism
of corruption soon fizzles out.
The agents of change or factors that influence the existence
and success of a council or pool include caution and sifting
during the selection stage across wide cross-sections of
society and timely renewing of the system as a whole.
The pool of people should fully reflect today's society and
the focus should be on the means to achieve change and not the
lack of specific policies. The agents of change that influence
the existence and success of a pool need to be considered
carefully for optimum results.
